what’s the deal with oily skin?
Oily skin, hormones, and acne are intricately connected. Our skin naturally produces oil that is regulated by sebaceous glands, and when this balance is disrupted, it can lead to excess oiliness. Hormones, particularly androgens, play a pivotal role in influencing sebum production. During periods of hormonal fluctuations, an overdrive in androgen activity can trigger an increase in oil secretion. This excess oil, combined with dead skin cells and bacteria, creates an ideal environment for acne to thrive.
Here are some tips to help if you are struggling with oily skin…
Use a lightweight, acne-safe moisturizer in the morning and evening to keep your skin hydrated without adding excessive oil. Proper hydration helps maintain skin balance and can actually help regulate oil production. My favorite brand is Clearstem!
Get tested! The two main hormonal imbalances that can contribute to oily skin include cortisol and androgens so it’s important to understand if any of these levels are imbalanced in yourself to directly target them.
Don’t over-exfoliate or over-wash your face (even though it’s tempting). Oily skin still needs a balanced level of hydration and protection. Over-exfoliating can strip away the natural oils that form a protective barrier on the skin, leading to increased sensitivity, redness, and irritation.
