Why I don’t recommend oral antibiotics for acne

While oral antibiotics are commonly prescribed to treat acne due to their “anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties”, their long-term use can have drawbacks and may contribute to more gut problems - and therefore more acne. Acne is not a “bacteria” problem 99 percent of the time..acne goes back to inflammation, hormonal imbalances, stress, etc. which is why many people who take oral antibiotics for their acne, only have temporary short-term relief. Once they discontinue the medication (like most medications), their symptoms return - usually even worse and something they were never warned about.

So let’s talk about why that is!

One of the main concerns is the disruption of the natural balance of gut bacteria, known as the gut microbiota. Antibiotics, while targeting harmful bacteria associated with acne, can also indiscriminately eliminate beneficial bacteria in the gut. This disruption may lead to dysbiosis, an imbalance that can result in digestive issues, such as bloating, diarrhea, constipation, SIBO, yeast overgrowth, and more. Not only that but our gastrointestinal system is HIGHLY associated with our immune system and hormone production - two things that we need in tip-top shape when it comes to healing our skin.

Moreover, extended antibiotic use may contribute to antibiotic resistance, a global health concern. The overuse of antibiotics can lead to the development of resistant strains of bacteria, making it harder to treat infections in the future. In the context of acne treatment, as the body becomes accustomed to the antibiotics, their efficacy may decrease over time, necessitating higher doses or alternative treatments which is why many people have to switch around from one medication to another.

I absolutely understand the appeal of taking medications and wanting that “quick-fix” option..I was on many rounds myself with little improvement and more disruption to my overall health at the end of the day. Most often we have to HEAL the gut when it comes to treating acne…not disrupt it even more which is super backward when it comes to antibiotic prescription.

To address acne for GOOD, we have to heal from the inside out. There are many alternative options when it comes to clearing your skin that don’t involve harsh medications with major side effects!
