Why I Don’t Recommend Depending on Trends and Guessing to Heal Acne
Look…in today’s world, it’s easy to get swept up in the latest health trends and quick-fix solutions - especially when it comes to something as frustrating as acne. Whether it’s cutting out entire food groups, relying on trendy supplements, or trying the latest viral skincare hack, many people (and myself years ago) find themselves guessing their way to clear skin!
But the truth is, acne is complex, and depending on trends or random guesses to heal it often leads to more frustration than progress. This is because…
1. Trends Often Ignore Root Causes
As most of us know, trends focus on surface-level fixes, like a new skincare ingredient or diet change, without addressing the DEEPER root causes of acne. Acne is rarely caused by just one thing - it's often a result of hormonal imbalances, gut issues, inflammation, and stress over time that’s been building up. By focusing solely on trends, you miss what’s really driving your breakouts…and just end up even more frustrated. Your energy is better spent elsewhere!
For example, cutting out dairy may work for some, but it won’t solve acne for everyone, especially if the root cause is hormonal or related to gut health. Guessing your way through trends can lead to unnecessary restriction and stress without getting to the heart of what your skin really needs.
2. One-Size-Fits-All Approaches Don’t Work
Not only that but trends promote “one-size-fits-all” approaches. And this of course doesn’t work because everyone’s body is different. What works for one person might not work for another, and worse - it could even make things worse (also had to learn this the hard way years ago…). I see this time and time again with clients who jump on trendy diets or skincare routines, only to see their skin flare up because they didn’t consider their unique hormonal balance, stress levels, or underlying gut health.
That’s why guessing with popular trends often leads to confusion, wasted money, and worse skin. Instead, understanding your body and focusing on personalized healing strategies is the key.
3. Quick Fixes Can Be Harmful
Many trends promise fast results, but these quick fixes can come at a cost. For example, aggressively restricting food groups or overusing skincare products can do more harm than good. This may lead to new issues, such as nutrient deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, or a compromised skin barrier for example - all things that put you backward and away from your ultimate goal of healing your skin for good.
Healing acne takes time, and short-term solutions often mask the problem rather than solve it. For example, trying a supplement because it’s trending might feel exciting, but blindly supplementing without understanding your body’s needs can make things worse without you even knowing it.
4. Healing Acne Requires Consistency and Patience
One of the biggest reasons I don’t recommend relying on trends is that true acne healing requires consistency and patience. If something is guaranteed to heal your acne within a certain time frame…I’m telling you to run in the opposite direction. When you jump from one trend to the next, you never give your body the time it needs to respond to a well-thought-out plan. There’s no overnight miracle when it comes to chronic imbalances.
Rather than wasting time on short-lived trends, I encourage you to focus on small, sustainable changes that build up over time to BIG WINS.
5. Testing Over Guessing
Lastly, one of the best things you can do to heal your acne is to stop guessing and start testing. Functional lab tests, like hormone panels or GI-MAP stool testing, help uncover the exact root causes of your acne, allowing for a personalized treatment plan. This way, you can stop throwing random products and treatments at your skin and start giving your body exactly what it needs to heal.
I’ve seen clients make huge breakthroughs once they stopped relying on trends and focused on what their body was truly telling them through their results. Something that is crucial in my approach.
So again…
Acne is not a surface-level problem; it’s an internal signal that something is out of balance. Jumping from trend to trend, guessing your way to clearer skin, and hoping for quick fixes will only get you so far. Instead, focus on understanding the root causes of your acne and creating a personalized plan that works for your unique body.
