How to Stick to Your Acne-Healing Routine During the Holidays
The holidays are such a special time of year - spending time with family, yummy meals, and maybe including some much-needed relaxation. But let’s be real..they can also throw a wrench into your well-established acne-healing routine and the anticipation of not having a foundation would STRESS me out years ago. Between travel, late nights, and indulging in sweets, it’s easy to feel like all your progress could reverse. But I’m here to tell you it won’t and doesn’t have to with some intention behind some small choices over the next couple of weeks!
Here are some practical tips to help you stay consistent with your routine while still enjoying the upcoming season (because health goes beyond just what we eat and how we move our body, being present and enjoying our time outside of those tangible changes is JUST as important):
1. Keep Your Skincare Routine Simple and Travel-Friendly
If you’re traveling or staying with family, simplify your skincare routine to the essentials: a gentle cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen. Clearstem skincare is my favorite non-toxic, acne-friendly brand (code DRSHEYDA for 15% off). Opt for travel-sized versions of your products or transfer them into TSA-approved containers. This way, you’re less likely to skip steps because your routine feels manageable and not overwhelming. Also pro tip - pack a few acne spot/pimple patches to help manage things if a breakout does occur out of your routine!
2. Prioritize Hydration
Between salty meals, cocktails, and the dry cold air this time of year, it’s easy to become dehydrated. Aim to drink LOTS of water throughout the day, especially if you’re indulging in alcohol or caffeine. Carry a water bottle with you with added electrolytes as a gentle reminder to hydrate. If water feels boring, add a slice of lemon or cucumber!
3. Don’t Skip Your Supplements
With the busyness of the holidays, it can be easy to forget to take supplements. Keep them in a visible spot, like on your bedside table or next to your toothbrush, to help you remember. If you’re traveling, use a pill organizer to stay on track. Put a reminder on your phone. Whatever works best for you because consistency is key!
4. Make Balanced Food Choices (Without Deprivation)
Holiday meals can feel tricky (and understandably stressful at times) when you’re focused on healing your skin. Instead of stressing about every ingredient, aim to balance your plate. Pair indulgent foods with protein, healthy fats, and fiber to help balance blood sugar levels and reduce inflammation. For example, if you’re having a slice of pie, enjoy it after a protein-rich meal and pair it with a side of berries or nuts. And also the energy behind what you’re eating is JUST as important. PS remember a couple of days of eating out of routine isn’t going to reverse your entire progress!
5. Stay Consistent with Sleep (as Much as Possible)
Late-night holiday gatherings can wreak havoc on your sleep schedule - and your skin. Sleep is the foundation for all the pillars of health and healing. While it’s okay to stay up late and enjoy your time off, try to stick to a consistent bedtime most nights. Quality sleep is crucial for managing stress, blood sugar, and more.
6. Manage Holiday Stress
Let’s face it - the holidays can be stressful. Whether it’s gift shopping, family dynamics, or travel plans, stress can flare up your acne. Make time for small moments of self-care, like a walk in nature, a warm bath, or even just 5 minutes of deep breathing. Practice gratitude. Jotting down a few things you’re thankful for each day can shift your mindset and lower stress levels going into this (sometimes) chaotic season of the year.
7. Be Flexible and Forgiving
Remember, the holidays are meant to be enjoyed! If you miss a step in your routine or indulge a little more than planned, it’s not the end of the world. Consistency over time is what matters most, so don’t let a few off days derail your progress. Instead of aiming for perfection, focus on doing the best you can with the circumstances you have.
So again, healing your acne isn’t about being perfect; it’s about making intentional choices that support your skin and overall health. By planning ahead and giving yourself some grace, you can stick to your routine while still soaking in all the holidays have to offer.
