How to Manage Acne During the Holidays

If you’re anything like me, the holidays used to be more of a stress due to how much I’d worry about all the potential skin triggers...and let me tell you - it’s not a fun way to live. The holiday season should be full of joy, connection, and indulgence - but again, for those of us with acne-prone skin, it can also be a time of stress, breakouts, and setbacks. Between sugary treats, travel, and a disrupted routine, it’s super easy to feel “out of control”. BUT with a little planning and mindfulness, you can enjoy the holidays without sacrificing your skin health. Here are some tips below!

Balance Your Blood Sugar

Holiday treats and carb-heavy meals should absolutely be had and enjoyed..but of course can lead to blood sugar spikes, which can exacerbate acne by triggering inflammation and androgens. Rather…

  • Pair sweets with protein and fiber. If you’re indulging in a dessert, enjoy it with a handful of nuts or a side of veggies to slow the sugar absorption.

  • Don’t skip meals. Skipping meals in anticipation of a big feast can cause blood sugar rollercoasters. Eat balanced meals throughout the day to stabilize your energy levels and hormones.

be mindful of Holiday Stress

Stress during the holidays - whether from traveling, family dynamics, or a packed schedule - is REAL and can sometimes be inevitable. So…

  • Prioritize self-care. Take 10-15 minutes a day to do something calming, like journaling, walking, or deep breathing exercises. Fill your cup first!

  • Set boundaries. Don’t overcommit to events - it’s okay to say no to protect your energy and health.

  • Get enough sleep. Sleep is the foundational for EVERYTHING so aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep every night.

Be Mindful of Alcohol Consumption

Alcohol can dehydrate your skin, trigger inflammation, affect your liver, and gut, disrupt sleep, and more..all of which can contribute to acne. Here are some tips!

  • Opt for lower-sugar options. Choose drinks like dry wine, vodka with soda water, or spirits with fresh citrus instead of sugary cocktails.

  • Alternate with water. For every alcoholic drink, have a glass of water to stay hydrated and reduce the impact on your skin.

  • Take a binder. Take a binder after drinking to help mitigate the effects!

Don’t Be Too Hard on Yourself

Because most of all, the holidays are meant to be enjoyed, and perfection isn’t the goal!! Progress is. If you indulge a little more than planned or skip your routine one night, it’s okay! You aren’t taking steps backward if so.

  • Focus on balance. A few holiday treats won’t undo all your hard work. Return to your routine the next day without guilt and don’t restrict.

  • Celebrate small wins. Staying hydrated, getting quality sleep, or balancing your meals are victories worth celebrating throughout the craziness of the month! Whatever you are able to stick to..is a win!
